Brand activation consulting is the work of deciding which moment, place or community a brand should enter, what it has to do there to be worth joining, and what belief it has to leave behind once the moment ends. Vivaldi is a strategy firm. We design and direct activations, and we do not run events, staff field teams or produce experiential builds. We have worked on activation this way since 1999, including the launch of Scotts Miracle-Gro’s Black Magic compost into the UK urban gardening community.

When companies bring us in
Brand activation is usually bought by a CMO, a brand director or a regional marketing lead who already has a budget and a date, and no settled answer to what the brand is supposed to be doing there. The trigger is almost always a specific commitment rather than a planning cycle.
- A new product has to enter a community that distrusts advertising. The audience is reachable and unpersuadable by paid message alone. Scotts Miracle-Gro had this problem with Black Magic compost and young urban gardeners in the UK.
- A moment is already booked and nobody can say what it is for. A sponsorship, a season, a trade event or a retail takeover is signed, the invoice is committed, and the brief is still a request for ideas.
- Activation spend is scattered across dozens of local moments. Every market runs its own, none of them build on the last, and the only thing they share is the logo.
- The brand is well known and absent from where its customers gather. Awareness is high, the brand is nowhere in the conversations the category is actually having, and media weight has stopped closing that gap.
- The calendar is inherited. This year repeats last year’s moments because they are already on the calendar, and nobody has tested whether any of them still work.
Why most activations leave nothing behind
Activations are commissioned inside a moment and judged inside the same moment. Footfall, reach, sampling, engagement: every one of those metrics confirms that the thing happened. None of them says whether anyone thinks differently about the brand a month later. Four failures account for most of it.
- The brand arrives as a guest that brings nothing. Presence is bought rather than earned. When the only reason an audience meets the brand is that the brand paid to be in the room, the memory attaches to the occasion and not to the company that funded it.
- Success is measured on the day. Attendance, impressions and engagement all peak during the activation and get reported the week after, long before anything measurable about preference or permission could have moved.
- There is no second step. People take part, enjoy it, and are handed nothing to do next. A moment with no path out of it is a dead end, however well attended.
- The idea is borrowed from the campaign. Activation gets treated as the physical rendering of an advertisement, so it inherits the advertisement’s message and adds nothing the advertisement could not have said more cheaply.
The residue is the entire point, and it is worth being precise about why. Vivaldi’s 2026 study of twenty-four years of stock market data, Unrealized Value, found that strong global brands beat the S&P 500 by 3.7 percentage points a year between 2001 and 2024, turning a dollar invested into $15.85 against $7.03 in the index. That premium is built out of what people believe when nobody is selling to them. An activation contributes to it only if something survives the moment.
- MomentWhere the brand shows upThe occasion, place or community the brand buys or earns its way intoUsually strong
- ParticipationWhat people actually doThe thing the audience does rather than watches, and whether it needed this brand to be possibleUsually thin
- RetellingWhat people repeat afterwardsWhether anyone describes it to someone who was not there, and whether the brand survives the retellingUsually absent
- BeliefWhat changes in the marketWhether consideration, permission or price moved for people who were never in the roomUsually unmeasured
What our brand activation consulting services include
Five bodies of work. Each can be engaged on its own, and most companies need three of them.
1. Deciding which moments are worth entering
Before anything is designed, we establish which occasions actually matter to the people you want, as opposed to which ones are available to buy.
- Where the category conversation already happens, including the communities and creators your brand has no relationship with
- Which moments your competitors have already made their own, and which of those claims are rented rather than owned
- What the current activation calendar costs in total, and which entries on it survive the question of what they changed
2. Finding the role the brand can honestly play
An activation works when the brand makes something possible that would not have happened without it. We establish what your company can credibly contribute to a given moment: a capability, an access, a product that solves a real problem in that setting, or a piece of expertise the community lacks. If the honest answer is a logo and a budget, we say so and recommend spending the money elsewhere.
3. Designing the activation idea and the thing people do
The brief we write is built around participation rather than exposure: what the audience does, why they would bother, what they get to keep, and what they are invited to do next. This is the step where an activation separates from a campaign. An activation brings the brand into a moment or a place. A campaign is a sustained planned communication with a creative idea at its center, and that work sits with our campaign development team.
4. Choosing the partners, creators and places
Who the brand stands next to is a strategic choice and it is routinely delegated to whoever is cheapest. We set the criteria, shortlist the partners and define the terms of the relationship: which communities, which creators, which retailers or venues, and what each side is actually bringing. For Scotts, the choice of two micro-influencers with real standing in small-space gardening did more than reach would have.
5. Building the measurement model and the handover
We define what the activation is accountable for before it runs, including the part that is measured after the moment closes: consideration among people who never attended, search and conversation volume, retail movement, and the behavior you want repeated. Then we hand the brief, the criteria and the measurement model to the agencies, production partners and internal teams who execute, and we stay available to them rather than in the way.
Not sure which of these you need first?
Start with a working session with one of our partners. We will take the next moment already on your calendar, establish what the brand would be contributing to it, and tell you honestly whether it is worth the money.
How a brand activation engagement works
- Map. The moments, places and communities that matter to the audience you want, set against what you currently fund. The output is an honest view of which of your committed activations have a reason to exist.
- Choose. Which moments to enter, which to drop, and in what order. The output is a decision with the exclusions written down, including the ones that will be unpopular internally.
- Design. The role the brand plays, the thing people do, the partners, the second step and the measurement model. The output is a brief an agency or production partner can execute against without inventing the strategy.
- Hand over. Briefing the executing teams, agreeing what gets measured after the moment closes, and setting the review that decides whether it runs again.
Why companies choose Vivaldi for brand activation
Most firms that sell activation also produce it, which makes the recommendation to spend less structurally difficult for them. We sell neither production hours nor media, so there is nothing in our model that depends on the activation being large. That is also the limit of what we offer: if you need a stand built, a tour staffed or a field team managed, you need a production partner and we will tell you that in the first conversation.
- We work from the brand decision down. Activation is treated here as an instrument of brand strategy, not as a line in the events budget, so the question is always what belief has to move.
- We are willing to recommend cancellation. Several of the moments on a typical calendar exist because they existed last year. Naming those is the fastest money a brand activation engagement finds.
- Independent of the executors. We can set the criteria for choosing an agency, a creator or a venue without being one of the candidates.
- Published work, named clients. Our case studies carry the client’s name and what actually happened, including the engagements where the outcome was a change of direction.
How to evaluate a brand activation consultant
Five questions worth asking any firm that pitches you on activation, including us.
- Do you make money from the thing you are recommending? A partner who produces, staffs or buys the activation has a reason to want a bigger one.
- What would you measure a month after the moment closes? If the answer is reach, attendance or engagement, the proposal stops at the first box.
- What has the brand got that the audience actually wants in this setting? A firm that cannot answer without describing the brand’s values is describing a sponsorship.
- Which of our existing activations would you cancel? A partner who finds all of them worthwhile has not looked at them.
- Who executes, and what do they need from you? A strategy that cannot be handed to a production team as a brief is not finished.

One published engagement is tagged to this service. Scotts Miracle-Gro needed to launch Black Magic premium compost in the UK and to interest a young, urban audience with a standing resistance to branded communication. Working with the micro-influencers Michael Perry and Gothic Gardener, we built an Instagram channel from scratch and used their standing in the community to create underground interest in the product, asking people to help grow tomorrow’s city and make the most of their small spaces. Views and engagements ran into the hundreds of thousands, benchmarks for engagement were surpassed, people clicked through to buy on Amazon, and Black Magic is now established within the Scotts brand portfolio in the UK. Activation sits inside a wider set of decisions, and these are the neighbors it is most often confused with. The overall marketing plan and where the budget goes is marketing strategy. A sustained idea carried across time rather than concentrated in a moment is campaign development. Which channels carry it is social and digital marketing, and making the paid portion of it efficient is performance marketing. Launching a new offer into a market is go-to-market strategy. Deciding who the audience is in the first place is segmentation and targeting, turning attention into customers at a defensible cost is customer acquisition, and what the brand means before any of it starts is brand strategy. All of it sits under brand acceleration.
Brand activation consulting in the US and worldwide
Vivaldi is headquartered in New York and has a second US office in Los Angeles. Outside the US, our teams work from London, Zürich, München, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Singapore, Buenos Aires and Lima. Activation is the most local of these services, because a moment that matters in one market is invisible in the next and a calendar written centrally tends to fund the moments head office has heard of. We work with local teams on which moments are real where they are, and with the center on the small number of things that should hold everywhere, which is usually the role the brand plays rather than the thing it does.
