Growth from $9 billion to an estimated $69 billion in seven months? Wait, what?

Anthropic is four years old. Its annualized revenue run-rate has gone from roughly $9 billion at the beginning of the year to an estimated $69 billion. That is already larger than Coca-Cola’s annual revenue.

Extraordinary AI story. But also a marketing story.

For years, marketers have been told that growth is mainly about getting more buyers: increase penetration, build mental availability, make the brand easier to buy. That is important. But it is not the whole story.

Anthropic is not simply taking share in an existing “AI chatbot” market. With Claude Code and its push into enterprise workflows, coding and autonomous work, it is helping change what the market actually is.

New jobs get done. New workflows emerge. New budgets open up. New demand appears. That is a different kind of growth.

The biggest opportunities are sometimes not found by winning more share of an existing category, but by creating a new demand space.

This is why I struggle with the idea of one universal law of growth. Different markets grow in different ways.

Sometimes the right question is not: How do we get more buyers?

It is: Where is new demand forming, and how do we become the reference brand for it?

Don’t just compete for demand. Create the space in which demand grows.
